NWAC Youth Council (YC) Violence Prevention Toolkit

NWAC Youth Council Violence Prevention Tookits

The NWAC Youth Violence Prevention Toolkit project is made possible through funding from Status of Women Canada along with numerous partnerships. The NWAC Youth Council and the Youth Department developed the Toolkit in the spring of 2007 and it was officially launched in December 2007. This three-year initiative until 2010 is geared toward youth and services providers in a “Train the Trainer" type workshop with hopes that the trainers will provide additional training in their communities. The participants will be trained on five comprehensive youth Power Point Workshops developed by NWAC youth dealing with the subjects of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Date Violence, Emotional Violence, and Bullying; the Facilitator Guide which instructs facilitators how to use the Toolkit and deliver the Workshops; Fact Sheets and Handouts on all five topics including the additional topic of Community Action which teaches youth and communities how to get involved in violence prevention in their communities. The toolkit also contains Evaluation Forms for delivering the Workshops and the CD containing all Toolkit materials. The workshops are made to be delivered interactively in a variety of creative ways for participants, for example; facilitators can easily incorporate their own cultural teachings within the workshop or include games using the tools provided.

Statement by Senator Lillian Dyck on Violence Prevention Toolkit

Youth Intervenor (YI) Initiative

The HRSDC funded YI initiative historically incorporated a broad mandate including two principle focuses: Employability and Training, and Social Development of Aboriginal youth. NWAC's Youth Intervenor funding was successfully utilized over the last couple of years to effectively address pertinent issues concerning Aboriginal youth and girls in particular and their meaningful participation in the labour market and all aspects of Canadian society.

The YI position within NWAC's national office allowed for coordination of broad scope of youth related activities, including accessing additional funding to design and implement youth programs. Some of our successes include accessing funding to develop a youth violence prevention Toolkit, coordinating annual youth scholarships for young Aboriginal women, creating employment opportunities for young Aboriginal women through government summer student programs, provision of valuable volunteer experience, leadership skills and reference letters, arranging for youth training opportunities, and many others.
